A former chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has tasked the newly elected GFA president, Kurt Okraku, and his Executive Council to work hard to restore public confidence in the association.
He has also urged Mr Okraku to ensure that the GFA Secretariat is put to proper functioning in the FA president’s first 100 days in office in line with his manifesto promise.

Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe believes that with the image of the GFA soiled by the “Number 12” documentary by Anas Aremeyaw Anas, which lifted the lid on widespread corruption in football administration, image-building and public confidence in the new administration is one of the key ways to get supporters back to the stadia to revive domestic football.

The outspoken former FA chief said the lack of confidence in the administration of football could largely be seen in the apathy showed by the public towards domestic football, hence the need for the Okraku-led administration to prioritise the restoration of public confidence in the FA and domestic football.

“Apart from that [image-building], the quality of football must improve. If we continue to be second fiddle, football supporters won’t come to the stadium and will prefer to watch European football,” he advised.

As a way of attracting supporters back to the stadia during domestic competitions, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe suggested that the FA should structure the football calendar such that it did not conflict with matches of the major European leagues which enjoyed strong viewership in Ghana.

“They must work to change things so that the time our matches are played will not conflict with the European matches”, he said.

He also wants the new administration to restructure the Black Stars and to as a matter of urgency decide the fate of the head coach Kwasi Appiah immediately or tell Ghanaians who they intend to appoint as the new coach of the national team.

“The Black Stars must be restructured and they must come out with a decision as to who is going to coach them because nobody knows the position of the coach now. If it is the same coach they want, they must come out and say it whether Coach Kwasi Appiah is going to continue with the job. If they have in mind another person, they should come out quickly so we know also the coach who would handle them,” he told the Graphic Sports.
